On the Average Values of the Irreducible Characters of Finite Groups of Lie Type on Geometric Unipotent Classes

چکیده
In 1980, Lusztig posed the problem of showing the existence of a unipotent support for the irreducible characters of a nite reductive group G(F q ). This is de ned in terms of certain average values of the irreducible characters on unipotent classes. The problem was solved by Lusztig [16] for the case where q is a power of a su ciently large prime. In this paper we show that, in general, these average values can be expressed in terms of the Green functions of G. In good characteristic, these Green functions are given by polynomials in q. Combining this with Lusztig's results, we can then establish the existence of unipotent supports whenever q is a power of a good prime. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classi cation: Primary 20C33, secondary 20G40.

Some connections between powers of conjugacy classes and degrees of irreducible characters in solvable groups
Let $G$ be a finite group. We say that the derived covering number of $G$ is finite if and only if there exists a positive integer $n$ such that $C^n=G'$ for all non-central conjugacy classes $C$ of $G$. In this paper we characterize solvable groups $G$ in which the derived covering number is finite.
متن کاملOn the Existence of a Unipotent Support for the Irreducible Characters of a Finite Group of Lie Type
In 1980, Lusztig posed the problem of showing the existence of a unipotent support for the irreducible characters of a finite group of Lie type. This problem was solved by Lusztig in the case where the characteristic of the field over which the group is defined is large enough. The first named author extended this to the case where the characteristic is good. It is the purpose of this paper to ...
متن کاملOn the irreducible characters of Camina triples
The Camina triple condition is a generalization of the Camina condition in the theory of finite groups. The irreducible characters of Camina triples have been verified in the some special cases. In this paper, we consider a Camina triple (G,M,N) and determine the irreducible characters of G in terms of the irreducible characters of M and G/N.
متن کاملA Murnaghan–nakayama Rule for Values of Unipotent Characters in Classical Groups
We derive a Murnaghan–Nakayama type formula for the values of unipotent characters of finite classical groups on regular semisimple elements. This relies on Asai’s explicit decomposition of Lusztig restriction. We use our formula to show that most complex irreducible characters vanish on some -singular element for certain primes . As an application we classify the simple endotrivial modules of ...
